Que el camión transporte leche no es ninguna novedad, pero ¿que la leche sea lo que haga que el camión se mueva?, eso sí que es algo difícil de imaginar; sin embargo, un grupo de costarricenses lo hicieron posible.
Se trata de David García, Mariángela Ramírez, Abad Rodríguez, Silver Ceballo y Ricardo Alvarado, socios de, una empresa de biología sintética.
Estos cinco nuevos emprendedores del área científica (en su mayoría) eran parte de un grupo de 25 personas que se anotó para participar en IGEM, que es una competencia internacional de biología sintética organizada por el Massachusetts Insfitute of Technology (MIT), en la que equipos de todo el mundo diseñan y construyen microorganismos genéticamente modificados para que cumplan funciones que naturalmente no presentan.
Tomando en cuenta la buena acogida que están teniendo los proyectos verdes en Costa Rica, consideraron que tendrían una buena recepción si apostaban por usar un residuo industrial. Poco a poco fueron aterrizando el proyecto y aparecieron en su lista de aliados suero de leche, biodiésel y tipos de bacterias, entro otros elementos, hasta llegar al paso de los genes a utilizar y los protocolos.
La industria láctea genera cantidades significativas de residuos líquidos, sobre todo leche diluida, leche separada, crema y suero, incluyendo grasas, aceites, sólidos suspendidos y nitrógeno. “La descarga de estos sin tratamiento previo se convierte en un foco contaminante”, reza el informe La industria de la leche y la contaminación del agua, elaborado por Elizabeth Valencia Denicia, de la maestría en Ingeniería del Instituto Tecnológico de Puebla, y por María Leticia Ramírez Castillo, del departamento de Ingeniería en Biotecnología de la Universidad Politécnica, también de Puebla.
Este mismo documento explica que se estima que a partir de 10 litros de leche de vaca se puede producir de 1 a 2 kg de queso y un promedio de 8 a 9 kg de suero. Así mismo, Valencia y Ramírez detallan en el documento que “una industria quesera media que produzca diariamente 40,000 litros de suero sin depurar genera una contaminación diaria similar a una población de 1,250,000 habitantes”.
La idea de Cibus 3.0 es que ese suero de leche sea transformado en biodiésel, sólo que éste no será distribuido, sino absorbido por la misma empresa láctea que produce el suero, aclaran los jóvenes al describir el impacto de su empresa. “Esto nos permite producir un biodiesel más barato (entre 30 y 50% pioneros costaría menos que el precio de mercado); por lo general, un camión pequeño consume unos 100 litros de diésel, lo que en dinero representa más de 160 dólares, esta cifra debe multiplicarse por el movimiento diario o mensual de los vehículos que utiliza una empresa de este rubro”.
Así como se afinaron las ideas, también se afinó el grupo: de los 25 que empezaron, sólo quedaron los cinco citados. Una de ellas, Mariángela, en realidad inició como su asesora. Luego de un año con ellos, decidieron integrarla como parte del equipo.
“Inicialmente no sabíamos mucho sobre biología sintética. Todos teníamos conocimientos de biología molecular, bioquímica y microbiología, pero no manejábamos bien las técnicas más nuevas que nos permitirían desarrollar el proyecto a plenitud. El primer año fue de aprendizaje”, confesaron los jóvenes.
Esa inexperiencia, que a veces pudo jugar en su contra, fue algo a lo que le sacaron provecho. Los obligó a buscar ayuda y así generaron una serie de contactos que fueron vitales para el desarrollo del proyecto.
En 2014, se consolidó el equipo y levantó un Friends & Family de 10,000 dólares. Tres años después ya incorporaron a dos técnicas más en el equipo y cuentan con una inversión ángel de 700,000 dólares.
Este año participaron en el concurso Talent and Innovation Competion of the Americas (TIC Américas), evento que tuvo su final en la ciudad de Panamá. Ellos fueron escogidos como una de las 35 propuestas más sobresalientes del continente.
