En los últimos años ha crecido el interés por las construcciones verdes. Específicamente, la certificación LEED se ha alzado como la más confiable al evaluar qué tan sustentable es un edificio. Tanto así que el gobierno federal de Estados Unidos y algunos gobiernos locales, así como otras organizaciones, la piden como requisito para nuevas edificaciones.
El profesor John H. Scofield, de la universidad Oberlin, no está entre estos partidarios de la certificación. En un nuevo artículo, el experto afirma que no se ha comprobado que efectivamente los edificios que tienen la etiqueta ahorren más energía.
Antes que nada, Scofiel admite que es muy importante aumentar la eficiencia energética, ya que los edificios comerciales y residenciales son responsables del 40% de la energía usada en Estados Unidos. El problema con las construcciones certificadas como LEED es que “la mayoría de las afirmaciones de ahorros energéticos se basan en las simulaciones del equipo de diseño, simulaciones que discrepan notoriamente del desempeño energético medido.” Esto porque son pocas las empresas que permiten que se hagan mediciones una vez que ya se han construido los edificios.
De acuerdo con un estudio realizado por el New Buildings Institute (NBI) a petición del US Green Building Council, la organización que otorga el certificado LEED, el ahorro de energía es de entre 25 y 30%, pero Scofiel duda de estos datos porque la metodología de la investigación fue poco rigurosa: se usaron datos otorgados de forma voluntaria, además de que se comparó la media del consumo de edificios LEED con el promedio de las demás construcciones, dos cifras que no son equitativas.
El experto no niega que los edificios LEED generen ahorros, pero estos pueden ser mucho menores a los que promueve el USGBC. Según su propio estudio, el ahorro de site energy (la energía usada en el edificio que se ve reflejada en las cuentas de servicios públicos) es de entre 10 y 15%, mientras que para la source energy (la cantidad de combustible total que se necesita para operar la construcción, que incorpora pérdidas de transmisión, suministro y producción) no se ve una diferencia importante entre los edificios LEED y los que no cuentan con la certificación. Investigaciones realizadas en las ciudades de Nueva York y Filadelfia tienen resultados similares.
La conclusión de Scofiel es que es muy difícil saber si realmente la certificación LEED resulta en ahorros energéticos porque todos los estudios mencionados cuentan con una muestra muy pequeña. Mientras no sea posible obtener datos más confiables, no es conveniente que los gobiernos exijan la certificación a nuevos edificios.
