Recientemente la ciudad más grande del estado de Vermont, Burlington, con 42 mil habitantes, se posicionó como la primera en funcionar al 100% con fuentes de energía renovable, tanto eólica como hidráulica y biomasa.
Esto se logró con el conjunto de esfuerzos públicos y privados, después de que las autoridades de la ciudad notaran que al utilizar energía limpia no solo beneficiarían al medio ambiente, sino que sería un proyecto viable en el aspecto financiero.
Se prevé que con las nuevas medidas y sistemas implementados se reduzcan las emisiones de gases efecto invernadero, y en los próximos 20 años se logren ahorrar 20 millones de dólares, de acuerdo al director de recursos de energía de Burlington Electric, Ken Nolan.
La ciudad produce la mayor parte de su energía a través de plantas hidroeléctricas, que aprovechan la presión del agua de turbinas subterráneas para generar electricidad para la ciudad. El 30% la genera una planta debiomasa que quema madera de desecho y genera energía convirtiendo el calor en vapor, y el 20% restante la produce los aerogeneradores eólicos.
Si en alguna ocasión la producción energética se ve excedida, por ejemplo que en alguna temporada del año haya mucho viento para los aerogeneradores; el excedente se podrá vender a otras ciudades, esperando que la ciudad venda más energía limpia de la que requiere.
Taylor Ricketts, de la universidad de Vermont, asegura que hay que difundir el éxito de Burlington para que otras ciudades la tomen como ejemplo y participen con grandes acciones contra el cambio climático. Hasta ahora todo el estado de Vermont planea seguir los pasos de esta destacable ciudad y hacia el año 2050 adoptar energía renovable al menos en un 90%, incluyendo la electricidad, la calefacción y el transporte.
De acuerdo a las autoridades de Vermont, esta acción forma parte de un movimiento que se compromete con el medio ambiente y que sirve de ejemplo para el resto del país y del mundo. Al utilizar fuentes de energía alterna en las construcciones, la ciudad hace un gran aporte al control del cambio climático y al cuidado del ecosistema.
