Actualmente, la fabricación del cemento es responsable de cerca del 5% de la producción anual de CO2 en el mundo. Un nuevo estudio muestra que el “concreto romano” es mucho más sustentable que la mezcla que hacemos hoy en día.

Al mirar de cerca el Coliseo Romano, podemos ver que en realidad está construido de ladrillos de piedra que actúan como el encofrado del concreto. Los investigadores de la Universidad de California, Berkeley resumieron sus hallazgos en la revista de la American Ceramic Society y aseguraron que la antigua combinación de piedra caliza, ceniza volcánica y agua de mar, requiere de mucho menos calor (y menos combustible) que el proceso actual de solidificación del hormigón. Esto sugiere que la aplicación contemporánea del método romano antiguo podría producir un concreto más fuerte y duradero con un impacto medioambiental mucho menor.

Según el estudio, los romanos no usaban cemento Portland, que está hecho de piedra caliza calentada a 1,450 grados centígrados, sino que mezclaban la cal con puzolana o cenizas volcánicas. Esto requiere mucha menos energía ya que la cal sólo necesita ser calentada a 900 grados. Al mezclar esta solución con agua de mar, formaban un material extremadamente fuerte y estable.

Esta receta podría servir de modelo para la producción de hormigones más durables y respetuosos con el medio ambiente, ya que según los investigadores, la ceniza volcánica se encuentra en una gran cantidad de áreas alrededor del mundo .
