¿Cómo un lugar abandonado desde hace más de 20 años, que se había convertido en un sitio de delincuencia y prostitución, se transformó en un espacio atractivo para la sana convivencia familiar? En ocasiones basta con dar otro enfoque a los espacios urbanos para que resulten grandes proyectos para la comunidad.
En la ciudad de Nueva York, elevado a ocho metros del suelo se encuentra elHigh Line, un parque público que fue construido sobre las vías de un ferrocarrilen desuso desde 1980.
La estructura de 2.6 kilómetros de largo fue construida en 1930, y en 1999, siendo un espacio que albergaba el comercio ilegal, fue propuesta su demolición, sin saber en lo que podría convertirse.
Fueron dos jóvenes neoyorquinos, Joshua David y Robert Hammond, quienes a pesar de no tener experiencia en arquitectura o planificación urbana se interesaron en la zona y crearon un proyecto para su conservación; fue entonces que crearon Amigos del High Line, una asociación que buscaba transformar las vías a parque urbano.
Después de 10 años del proyecto, las vías abandonadas se convirtieron en un bello parque público en medio de grandes edificios. El parque cuenta con una variedad de árboles y plantas y en poco tiempo se convirtió en una importante atracción para la ciudad.
El espacio fue diseñado para que tuviera vegetación a lo largo y ancho de la zona, utilizando las especies de plantas que se desarrollaron en las vías durante su abandono, y se añadió al ecosistema vegetación proveniente de productores locales, proporcionando refugio para una gran variedad de especies de vida silvestre.
Actualmente el High Line es considerado un monumento a la historia industrial de Nueva York y su objetivo es el de ofrecer a los usuarios de la ciudad y sus visitantes un espacio común innovador de esparcimiento sano. Además, el parque alberga eventos de arte, ecología, música, entre muchos otros.
El Departamento de Parques y Recreación de Nueva York se encarga de la conservación del parque restaurado, asegurando el cuidado y mantenimiento de las áreas verdes.
Este proyecto es ejemplo de innovación y reutilización de zonas industriales para otras ciudades y uno de los más admirados en los últimos años debido a su modelo ecológico de movilización y el apoyo de la administración pública.
