Los plásticos generan un grave impacto ambiental; considerando que llegan a degradarse en 150 años, contaminan el suelo y los mares. Gracias a la ciencia y a mentes creativas, se desarrollan bioplásticos más verdes, limpios y sostenibles, con ¿aguacate o palta?
Scott Munguía, un joven mexicano — alumno del Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) — ha desarrollado un bioplástico hecho a base de semillas de aguacate. Este material se degrada más rápido que los plásticos convencionales, hechos con hidrocarburos.
En la actualidad existen otros bioplásticos, como el fabricado con cáscaras de camarón, desechos de champiñones o con maíz. Sin embargo, este bioplástico en particular destaca por no ser obtenido de una fuente alimenticia — como cuenta Scott Munguía a la Agencia Informativa CONACYT.
“El bioplástico tiene dos características fundamentales: que se obtiene de fuentes vegetales y que es biodegradable […] Pero tiene el mismo comportamiento que el plástico que todos conocemos.”
Para la fabricación de este bioplástico se extrae el biopolímero de la semilla de aguacate, el cual posteriormente se modifica químicamente para convertirla en el insumo principal para la producción — de biopolímero se convierte en plástico biodegradable.
Este bioplástico tiene la capacidad de degradarse en 240 días, o un poco más, dependiendo de las condiciones ambientales y la presencia de microbacterias. En este momento el producto creado por Munguía ha llegado a su etapa final, según informa Radio BUAP.
“En cuanto a esta tecnología no habrá más trabajo, esta tecnología ya está completa, no pensamos desarrollarla más porque ya llegó a un punto de diseño que cumple los objetivos trazados.”
Sabemos que el aguacate es un fruto que ofrece muchos beneficios y que su cultivo está afectando ciertas zonas, así que esperemos que este producto tenga un modelo realmente sostenible. Por otra parte, el beneficio que ofrece a degradarse tan rápido, hace que lo consideremos viable. ¿Qué opinan?
